Why Mapping Matters

Podoconiosis is a non-infectious cause of lower-limb lymphoedema associated with prolonged exposure to irritant soils. The research addressed gaps in understanding of its distribution and recognition within health services.

Study Aim and Design

The project used a population-based cross-sectional survey across twelve districts representing major affected regions of Uganda. Its aim was to establish the spatial distribution and risk of podoconiosis.

Using the Evidence

Mapping affected communities can inform where prevention, care and further investigation are needed. Findings on prevalence, geographical distribution and risk factors are presented in the publication below.

The project received a grant of £87,000 from the Wellcome Trust, United Kingdom.
