Why School Gardens
Food insecurity and reliance on food donations in Napak created a need for practical support for local food production. School gardens are intended to demonstrate agricultural practices, share skills with surrounding communities and supplement children’s diets.
Project Activities
Support included climate-resilient seeds, agricultural implements, fertilisers, pest-control products and initial labour costs. Teachers and pupils received basic training in agronomic practices.
Schools and Community Learning
The six participating schools provided land and managed the gardens through teachers and pupils. The gardens offer a practical setting for learning about crop production and growing a variety of foods.
Intended Benefits
The gardens aim to supplement school diets and demonstrate sustainable farming practices. The project combined agricultural inputs with practical learning for pupils and surrounding communities.
Partners and Support
Project partners included the Institute of Microbiology and Hygiene at Charité University Medicine Berlin, Makerere University and Napak District Local Government. The project received support from Mrs Siemers, Germany.
