PODOCONIOSIS RESEARCH
Understanding disease. Informing earlier care.
Research themes · Concept graphic, not study findings
Research Purpose
The project investigated ways to improve understanding of podoconiosis pathogenesis and inform evidence-based approaches to early diagnosis, treatment and prevention of progression.
Factors Under Investigation
The research examined soil mineral configuration and chemical composition, immunogenetic susceptibility and triggers of recurrent inflammation. Skin infections and tungiasis are considered possible co-factors to investigate, rather than established explanations.
Setting and Study Approach
The study used a population-based cross-sectional observational survey of self-reporting podoconiosis cases who have lived in selected sub-counties for at least ten years. The study area included Ngoleriet, Iriiri and Nabwal in Napak District.
Intended Contribution
The research was undertaken to inform diagnostic approaches, preventive measures and earlier care. It also addressed the need to support teaching, policy decisions and routine collection of information on podoconiosis.
Research Contribution
This completed project connected research on disease processes with questions about diagnosis, prevention and care. Specific study findings should be read alongside their underlying research evidence.
